MCA #3, Wednesday Afternoon

So... it was finally Kanan's turn to inherit the singing monstrosity. Which was almost fitting, in away. After all, he'd 'won' the thing by singing. Monstrously.

Kanan's time with the fish started, probably predictably, with a round of The Song That Doesn't End blaring directly into his mind, followed by a small fireworks display and a sudden vomit of glitter and confetti.

It had gotten worse from there.

He was looking slightly irritated by the time he made it to the door of his apartment, with the fish screaming Sabotage and stinking like pumpkin spice from under one armpit. He'd tried shutting it up by smashing it against a brick wall on the way - a move he'd never admit to - and the fish had healed from the damage.

So. Day one of his week with the fish had officially begun.

He could already hear his dog crying on the other side of the door.

"You know I would," Kaidan responded.

"Have a pit handy anywhere?"

It was worth asking, anyhow.

"Six seconds," Kaidan noted, looking at something near the street light. "That's how long it would take for me to make one."

Kanan considered that. And then he nodded.

"It'd have to be deep," he noted. "He'd just bounce right back out otherwise."

Kaidan shrugged a shoulder. He was aware that Anakin would probably just float right on out anyway.

"Point being, little worried about you being in a situation where you'd be at the mercy of someone I'm not sure has any," Kaidan noted.

That street light was so interesting. Look at all the bugs flying into and out of the light around it.

Kanan... tilted his head a little.

"He... is a Jedi," he pointed out, a little more quietly. "A Knight. He was one of the greatest of us, during the war."

What Kanan didn't know wouldn't hurt anybody.

"A man you refer to as a 'sleemo' more often than you've ever said his name," Kaidan pointed out, scrubbing a hand through his hair.

Also, Jedi were assholes.

"You've never insulted anyone like you do him. That's why it's confusing and a little concerning at the sudden buddy-buddy thing."

Kanan was quiet for a few moments more, and then sighed.

"Anakin Skywalker goes on the 'it's complicated,' list," he said, finally. "I got along with him well enough for a while after I arrived here, at the very least because..." He grasped at nothing for a moment, looking at the sky, himself. "... I wasn't all that was left."

Good. Okay. Those were words.

"Then something happened that... actually had me scared. Legitimately terrified. And he played it off as nothing and threw it back in my face. Said some things. He's still... good. He's just... difficult."

Kaidan was quiet for a long, looooong time.

"Your definition of 'good' and mine are not even in the same system," he finally said.

Especially if that 'good' were only due to 'Status: Jedi Knight'.

"He saved a lot of lives in the war," Kanan said, a little lamely. And then he shook his head. "More than most."

He'd, uh... also cost a few, there.

"That doesn't make him good," Kaidan said quietly, "it only makes him competent. What you described a minute ago are behaviors I would not attribute to someone who fell within my definition of 'good'."

Kanan was about to protest, but he stopped himself.

Kaidan would know damn well by now that if anything had him terrified, it was probably bad. Kanan would even put money on Kaidan's ability to guess about the nature of what it could have been.

"Maybe I'm trying to find a reason to believe in second chances," he said, finally.

The subject of the terror honestly didn't matter. Kanan could have been expressing a fear of moths, and if it had been blown off, Kaidan's sentiments would be exactly the same. Looking at someone who is obviously scared, hearing that they're scared, and blowing it off? That's not something a person with even the remotest spark of empathy and compassion does. He had certain views about people who lacked even that basic spark.

"Second chances are fine," Kaidan agreed, "Just take the Escape, and if he blows his, jettison the asshole into the sun."

"I'll keep that tactic in mind," Kanan replied, smiling wryly.

The 'jettison into the sun' thing seemed a little extreme for a few reasons including but not limited to the fact that if Kanan so much as twitched in that direction, it would probably be his own ass getting jettisoned. But it seemed like a solid enough plan otherwise.

Kaidan didn't do things by halves. You already knew that. Besides, he had faith in your ability to be a devious, underhanded, outright bastard if you had to be.

"It's better than the pit trap idea," Kaidan shrugged. Because it didn't involve the option of Anakin coming back without Kanan.

[uncertain_dume]

"There is that," Kanan agreed. "The pit trap would be funny for about three seconds, though."

And then he would no longer be in the pit.

"I wouldn't be laughing," Kaidan shrugged.

No, you'd probably be hanging in the air with your breath unable to pass the Force-choke.

Not that it would stop Kaidan from trying.

Kanan was about to make another quip, but decided against it.

After all, if Anakin were to come back without him, he supposed Kaidan would have reason enough to be angry.

"Fair enough," he settled on. "I'll come back, though. One way or another."

Angry wouldn't even come close to describing it.

"Good. Hernando'd have to cut his cupcake order in half if you weren't around, and I kind of like the variety," Kaidan replied.

[uncertain_dume]

"I wouldn't dare do that to Rosalie," Kanan said, and now he was smiling again. "I'd come back just for that, if that was the case."

[spectre_alenko]

"There you go, now we know the correct thing to put in a summoning circle for you," Kaidan said, "Cupcakes, fruit, caf."

[uncertain_dume]

"If that doesn't bring me back, nothing will," Kanan agreed solemnly.

Good call on the caf, yeah.

He was starting to know all your vices, Kanan. Run.

Speaking of..

"How is Hera, anyway? I haven't seen her in weeks."

[uncertain_dume]

"She wants to know what she did in order to deserve our houseguest," Kanan offered, managing by some miracle to look too goofy about her, for once. "The fish takes mercy on nobody, I guess."

[spectre_alenko]

"If she opts not to stay on her ship, she's welcome to crash at my place," Kaidan offered, "Stance, too. Chopper, you're stuck with."

It's not like he was sleeping in his bed, someone may as well get some use out of it.
