MCA #3, Friday Afternoon

So. Storm on the way. And they were in an apartment building, which meant that preparations to protect the actual structure of their current home were mostly out of their hands. Kanan had picked up a few extra supplies, and was just contemplating what was worth running across to the scrapyard to fetch from the Ghost, just in case, when he let loose a kind of agonized sigh.

"Should've left the Escape on Moraga," he muttered. "You'd think somebody would have converted one of those warehouses into a proper hangar by now so that we'd have somewhere covered to keep our ships when we're expecting weather like this."

What? It wasn't his first storm, even if it was his first big one on Earth. But he wasn't super thrilled about the idea of leaving his baby out there to try to hold her own against crazy winds and the potential of flying debris.

"If I'd known we'd get this sort of weather around here, I might have," Hera sighed. The Ghost would probably be fine, but it didn't mean she had to like it.

"What sort of infrastructure do we have here anyway?" she asked. "Anything to divert it or minimize damage?" She hadn't seen much, but maybe she'd missed it.

"I've seen people putting wood up over windows," Kanan sighed. "Which are actual glass, not transparisteel, so that's something we'll have to keep an eye on, too. Beyond that... nothing I've noticed. I guess they just let the weather do its thing here and deal with the aftermath."

Little backwards, Earth, but okay.

Hera sighed. Not that she hadn't been on planets like this before, but...

"Would we be better off just taking the Ghost up for a few days?"

Kanan sighed and shrugged his shoulders.

"Do you want right now to be the time we find out how well Stance takes to space travel?"

While there was a storm? Really?

"Or how well Chopper takes to Stance not taking well to space travel, at that. It's just some wind and rain, it'll probably be fine. The locals don't seem too concerned about it, yet."

He kind of had a bad feeling about it, but when didn't he?

"I wonder if I should bring Chopper in here," Hera mused. "Though I don't think he minds storms. I'll ask him."

She gave Kanan a look that said he would absolutely be nice about it.

Kanan's answering look was a faintly exasperated squint of one eye.

"If he can play nice with the dog, sure," he settled on. "I'm not opposed to mesh taping him to a wall if he gives Stance a hard time, though."

There, see? He would behave if Chopper behaved. Easy.

"I'll make sure he's nice to Stance," Hera promised. "I can get between the two of them if I have to. You, on the other hand, will just need to be patient with him. You're the adult, remember."

Theoretically.

"Well, Chopper isn't exactly a child," Kanan pointed out, rolling his eyes. "Where did you pick him up, anyway?"

A beat.

"No, don't answer that. I'm not actually in the market."

"In a Y-wing that crashed after a battle on Ryloth," Hera answered anyway. "And he's not a child, no, but I don't know how much he remembers before I found him. You know astromechs are mostly wiped periodically."

"Most droids are," Kanan agreed. "It's a security thing."

He paused, and then frowned a little, looking at Hera thoughtfully. That wasn't really the sort of thing that people worried about with their droids. Not usually, anyway.

"He means a lot to you, huh?"

"He gave me something to do, kept me going when my father more or less abandoned me." Hera shrugged. "It probably sounds corny to say we rescued each other, but he was there for me."

Kanan nodded a little, quietly contemplating that.

"Okay. I'll lay off him a little," he decided. "But if he messes with my dog he's staying in the 'fresher until the storm blows over."

"Thank you," Hera said. "And that's fair. He needs to learn just like Stance that smaller things aren't for picking on."

"Plus, Stance is still basically a baby," Kanan noted. "And significantly more squishy than Chopper. He doesn't come with a built-in stunner."

And that was probably for the best, really.

"He really just wants to make friends. He's never seen anything quite like Chopper before."

"And Chop's not used to things quite so...energetic," Hera said wryly. "But I will talk to him. I don't think he'd actually hurt Stance, but he doesn't need to frighten him, either."

"I'll try to get Stance to calm down, but like I said, it's hard to say how he'll handle this weather. I don't think he's ever been through a hurricane before either. He'll probably be scared enough without Chopper's help."

Kanan shrugged.

"I guess we'll see, either way."

Hera nodded. "We'll manage."

"We'll manage," Kanan sighed. "And once this kriffing storm blows over, maybe then we can look into buying out a warehouse and converting it into a hangar. Is there anything in the junkyard that needs to be secured before the wind kicks up?"

"The whole thing?" Hera said. "I've put tarps over everything I could, though I wouldn't mind some help making sure they're secure."

[uncertain_dume]

"Can do," Kanan replied. "Not just that the tarps are secure, but any of the scrap. Last thing we want is something flying up and crashing into the ships there, anyway."

He paused, then added, "I might move the Escape there too, at least to wait this out. There's a bit more windbreak there than having her parked on a rooftop. She's mostly wing, and I don't know exactly how much to expect from Earth's more severe weather yet."

Hera nodded. "Has she got adjustable magnetic clamps? You could secure her to the Ghost. Nothing's picking that up."

She said it firmly, because she didn't care how big this storm was, it would not. Or she would be having words with physicists.

"Well, what kind of smuggling ship would she have been if she didn't?" Kanan was way too proud of his baby. "That sounds like a good arrangement to me. If she's strong enough to hang on to another ship in hyperspace, she'll be just fine during a bit of wind and rain."

He maybe sounded a little strained when he said that 'wind and rain' part. Because he was utterly in denial about what he was feeling right then.

"Sounds good." Hera nodded. She squinted at him. "Everything okay?"

"Just a feeling," Kanan replied, squinting one eye a little as he looked toward the windows. "Nothing too bad. I don't think we're going to have another Cynda on our hands. But I'm pretty sure this storm is going to be a rougher one than people are expecting."

He had no idea.

"We'd better hurry and get everything tacked down, then," Hera said. "Anything left to do here?"

Kanan shook his head a bit.

"I have a checklist of emergency supplies we should bring back from the Ghost," he noted, "but there's not much else we can do, personally, with the building. It isn't ours."

"Let's head over now, then," Hera said, going for her jacket. "Get it done as soon as possible."
