MCA #3, Saturday Morning

Well, this was an awkward way to wake up.

That was the first thought through his head as he realized he wasn't in the bed alone. There was somebody else in that bed with him - lekku, warm to the touch, a Twi'lek, though he couldn't dredge up a name for her if his life depended on it - and just the fact that he was waking up half-curled around a person whose name he couldn't even remember was enough to jolt him awake just that little bit more.

There was something at the food of the bed, too and a quick glance down didn't betray much in the dim morning light beyond that it was some kind of animal, maybe the Twi'lek girl's pet? Which meant that he was definitely the one intruding here. Made sense. He didn't recognize the room, either. Couldn't even remember the situation that put him here in the first place.

Hell, he must've been pretty drunk last night, then. Couldn't remember the girl, the place, how he even got to be here...

His own name...?

"Wait, what?"

Oh, he had a bad feeling about this.

Kaidan'd be leaning against the wall laughing himself to tears. Kanan was going to kick his ass on Monday, but honestly? These weren't memories Kaidan felt one tiny shred of guilt about leaving behind from this weekend.

After he was able to talk without wheezing from laughter, he called, "Stance, come on buddy. Time for walks. Let Daddy up."

Stance gave Kanan's face one more lick for good measure, and Kanan sat up in a bit of a daze, hair everywhere and a hand reaching up to try to get some of that slobber from his face.

"Well," he said as Stance trotted over proudly, bouncing a circle around Kaidan for saying the 'w' word, "that was the most vicious wolf attack I've ever been a part of, right there."

Dog. Same thing.

Kaidan dutifully gave the pup all the pets and praise he could want while he waited for Kanan to sort himself out.

"Yeah, he's a vicious brute," Kaidan grinned. He offered Kanan a hand up. "Let's go get you cupcakes for taking that licking like a man."

"They better be everything you've said they are and more," Kanan declared as he took the offered hand.

... Considering Kaidan hadn't actually said much about them, this would be an easy bar to stumble over.

Kaidan hauled him easily to his feet. "Pretty sure you're going to enjoy 'em, buddy."

He was absolutely sure. He remembered the last first time. Kaidan opened the door behind him to let Stance barge his way on out. He knew the drill.

"I'm looking forward to finding out." A pause, and then over his shoulder, for Hera's benefit, he was calling, "Taking the dog for a walk! We'll be back!"

Kaidan followed Stance down the stairs, laughing at how the excited puppy was basically prancing all over the place. He reached the outside door and opened it to let him out. "We're going to my place, buddy," he told Stance.

Not sure if Stance would understand him, but it didn't really matter. Stance didn't generally stray too far from Kanan. Like right now when he was zooming excited circles around them.

Kanan chuckled as he watched the dog get his zooms out, smiling crookedly and shaking his head.

"Little excited, are you, buddy?"

Yeah, this was just Stance every day of the week.

"This isn't excited," Kaidan smirked at him, "This is his baseline. He's a very happy pup."

"Well... hell, if I had half his energy..." Kanan grinned a bit anyway. The enthusiasm, even at baseline, was pretty infectious.

"You usually do," Kaidan threw him a lopsided smile, "Sitting still is not your best skill, buddy."

[uncertain_dume]

"And now I'm afraid to ask what is," Kanan chuckled. He watched the dog pull another circuit around them. "I guess I'll remember soon enough."

"I'd say 'being a giant pain in my ass' but I'm worried you might not know I was kidding," Kaidan teased him, "Nah, man. You're a good friend. One of the best."

"Well, given that you and Hera are currently my only friends in the world, I should hope I'm at least decent at it," Kanan quipped.

Because leave it to that inner Caleb to joke over something like this.

"You have a lot more friends than just us, buddy. This weekend, though, most of 'em won't remember you any more than you remember them," Kaidan answered with a lopsided smile. "So yeah, I'd say you're more than decent at it. I mean, Jack likes you. She doesn't like many people."

Hadn't, anyway. Kaidan was kind of amused how she was basically starting her own pack on the island.

Kanan laughed a little at that.

"How many people just like me for my dog, then?"

Because really, he'd like him for his dog.

Kaidan leaned to bump his shoulder. "None. We like you for you and then we all get Stance as part of the package, so it's like, bonus dog."

He paused to pick up a fallen branch and hurled it down the street for Stance to go after.

"Bonus dog," Kanan echoed, grinning as he watched Stance take off after the stick. "Well, then I hope I do right by you all."

"Yeah, Kanan," Kaidan answered, "You do."

Stance returned with his stick prey and Kaidan leaned down to grab one end. He growled playfully back at Stance as he played tug with the branch, tail waving in the air like a fan. Eventually, Stance let him 'win' and Kaidan pitched the branch down the street again.

CIC in sight. Kaidan nodded to the building. "That's my place. Cupcakes are upstairs in the apartment."

It was reassuring that Stance was taking that stick right up to the door of the place and looking back at them both expectantly, wasn't it? Kanan was taking that as a good sign.

"Seems cozy," he offered. "What's it stand for?"

The C.I.C.

"Combat Information Center," Kaidan said, "It was what the command center on the Normandy, the ship I served on, was called."

He went up the stairs and scrubbed Stance's head. Then dug in a pocket for his keys and opened the door. "Come on in."

The apartment had changed a bit from the last time Kanan had seen it. Not that he'd remember that today anyway. Instead of a single large room, it was now a hallway dividing two bedrooms and leading into a common dining room and kitchen with a bathroom beyond.

On the dining room table was a white pastry box.

Huh. Military, then. Kanan looked at Kaidan thoughtfully, nodding as he picked it out in his bearing.

He wouldn't have known enough about the upstairs to comment about the renovation, no, but the pastry box grabbed his attention readily enough.

"I'm guessing that's where the cupcakes live, huh?"

Jedi intuition. Honest.

It wasn't subtle, what with the cargo pants, t-shirt, dog tags, combat boots..

Kaidan grinned at him. "Yes. That is where the cupcakes live. Go forth and investigate. Stance can have any that are white. If they're brown, they've chocolate in and it's bad for doggos."

Was he going to just lean against the wall and watch? Oh hell yes. This was going to be great.

Hey now. Precisely none of those things were military standard in Kanan's galaxy.

Maybe the combat boots.

Kanan gave Kaidan an amused look at that information, and took note of the fact that he'd set himself up there as a spectator.

"I see you're expecting a show," he joked, opening the box and looking at the selection of tiny cakes thoughtfully. He picked out one of those white ones, something with some kind of caramel drizzle on top of a mountain of icing, and stuck his finger into that caramel and icing so that he could try an experimental mouthful.

...

"Oh."

Kaidan grinned at him. "You were saying?" he teased, "I was there the other first time you had these. I kind of knew what to expect." He pushed off the wall and walked over to take the other chair.

Picked out a rum raisin cupcake and began peeling the paper off.

"You didn't have many sweets when you were growing up," Kaidan explained, "Only some of that had anything to do with Jedi ascetism. You enjoy them now, though you don't indulge nearly as often as I give you crap about."
